2016 Park Hero Volunteer Projects

park-heroesSaturday, October 1st – Park Heroes Volunteer Event at the Get Out! Greenville Festival – Conestee Park

Blue Ridge Outdoor Magazine is sponsoring a Park Hero event before the outdoor festival kicks off (exact time to be determined). The project will either be a river clean-up or trail maintenance along the Reedy River. Come out to show support for one of the best outdoor resources in the Upstate then stick around for the family friendly festival with outdoor sports, vendors, food trucks, music and more.

THURSDAY, October 13th, 9am to Noon – Trail Work on the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail – Hampton Station / West Washington Street

Haven’t heard of Hampton Station? The newest redevelopment in Greenville is shaping up with businesses, breweries, offices, and more just a short distance from the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail and along a planned eastern trail extension route. Come help spruce up the current SRT at the West Washington St. and Hampton Avenue area by clearing out intersection sightlines, landscaping, and maybe even working on the new trail corridor. Avison Young is sponsoring the event with FREE lunch for volunteers! It is a weekday, but Greenville County Schools are on holiday, so consider this an opportunity to instill some local outdoor stewardship in the kids, or just a good day to play hooky.

Register to volunteer here.

Saturday, October 22nd, 9am-Noon – Community Garden Build #1 – East Riverside Park

Gardening is a healthy way to recreate and community gardens offer a variety of social and physical benefits. A new organic community garden program is underway with Greenville County Parks, Recreation, & Tourism. Park Heroes will build raised garden plots and fill them with soil and compost to prepare them the 2017 growing season.

This community build will take place below the playground at East Riverside Park on October 22nd from 9am to Noon. No experience necessary and everyone is welcome to come help. Community Garden Manager Aerin Brownlee will lead volunteers, teaching them how to assemble the treated wood panels into beautiful new raised garden beds, spread mulch, and turn part of the park into a thriving community resource!

Tools, gloves, and training will be provided along with water, breakfast snacks, coffee, and a Park Hero T-shirt.
